Former Barcelona manager Koeman has named his Netherlands EURO 2024 squad without an in-form striker eligible for Nigeria's Super Eagles.

In-form striker and Nigeria Super Eagles hopeful Joshua Zirkzee has been a surprise omission from Ronald Koeman's preliminary Netherlands squad for EURO 2024, despite his heroics firing Bologna into the Champions League.

The 22-year-old, who is eligible for Nigeria through his mother, scored 11 goals and provided four assists to lead Bologna to a historic top-four finish in Serie A.

Former Barcelona boss Koeman, however, has opted against including Zirkzee in his 30-man party for this summer's European Championship.

It raises further questions over Zirkzee's international future, with the striker previously suggesting he could represent the Super Eagles if the Netherlands do not select him.

"Choosing Nigeria? It's not easy to say. If the Netherlands aren't calling, then I'll choose Nigeria," Zirkzee remarked earlier this year, acknowledging the fierce competition in both squads.

Born in Schiedam to a Dutch father, Zirkzee has played for the Netherlands at various youth levels but is yet to be capped by the senior side.

His prolific campaign at Bologna looked to have put him in contention for a place in Koeman's Euro 2024 plans for Holland.

But the Oranje coach has decided to overlook Zirkzee for now, at least, despite his red-hot form which almost single-handedly sealed Bologna's Champions League berth.

Nigeria may sense an opportunity to swoop for Zirkzee should he continue to be shunned by his birth nation at the international level.

The Super Eagles have previously managed to convince sensations like William Troost-Ekong and Cyriel Dessers to switch allegiance to the West African nation and could fancy their chances again with the Bologna superstar.
