Former Barcelona forward Alexis Sanchez weighs in on the Ligue 1 title race.

Olympique Marseille forward Alexis Sanchez believes his team can dethrone their bitter rivals, Paris Saint-Germain in the first position and eventually win the Ligue 1 trophy.

The Parisians had a healthy lead at the top of the table, but their current poor form, which continued in last night's 3-1 defeat to Lorient, leaves them only five points above Le Classique rivals Marseille.

Former Arsenal forward Sanchez, who was instrumental in his team's 2-1 comeback win against Auxerre to ensure they capitalised on the league leader’s slip up believes winning Marseille's first league title since the 2009/10 season and becoming the first club to win 11 Ligue 1 titles is a realistic ambition this season.

What Alexis Sanchez said

The Chilean forward was speaking after Marseille's win on Sunday evening when he spoke of their title ambitions.

He believes cutting the gap to PSG to only five points is inspiring and would only serve to motivate them further, saying self-belief is required to depose the league leaders.

“We’re five points away from PSG, it’s a source of motivation. And on a personal level too, I’m pleased to be so close to the league leaders. And we need to believe we can get the title, I believe we can do it. We need to have hope and stay united as a team," he said, per GFFN.

“We lost a lot of points against the run of play in previous games. We’re growing, we need to keep going, to keep improving to become an even more competitive team, both domestically and internationally.

“It was very important to win tonight before facing a direct rival. It’s a battle. We had to stay concentrated for 90 minutes, the important thing was to win, to make people happy.”

As previously reported, PSG, edging closer to their 11th Ligue 1 title were fully expected to stroll to victory against Lorient, but the champions were stunned and made to succumb to a 3-1 defeat.
