Former Barcelona star Jordi Alba has revealed the reason for his shock departure from the club despite having one more year on his current contract.

The former Barcelona second-captain helped the club clinch the 2022/23 LaLiga title, their first since the 2018/19 season.
Alba played 24 times for Barcelona in LaLiga on the road to the league title, but shocked many of the club’s supporters by announcing that the 2022/23 season would be his last campaign with the club.
Now Spanish defender has revealed the reasons for deciding to call time on his Barcelona career, saying, “If I had been selfish, I would have stayed: I had a contract, I was at home and close to my family. I think the most honest thing, however, was to leave.”
Alba confident in replacement’s ability
Alba was speaking after Spain’s UEFA Nations League final success when he revealed that he needed to leave in the club’s best interest despite wanting to stay to fulfil his contract.
Despite his departure, Alba also noted that he believed that the club would not miss him too much and were in the safe hands of his successor Alejandro Balde.

Alba said, “(Balde is) a physical beast. He’s young, he has things to improve, but I think he has had a great season despite his youth.
“He didn’t have a lot of experience behind him and he has performed very well.”
Balde was Barcelona’s starter in the 2022/23 season and could be the Blaugrana’s first choice in the position for many years to come.
