The Liverpool star struggled to make an impact in the Carabao Cup final against Newcastle, sparking discussions about his energy levels during the holy month.
Richards points to fasting as a factor in Salah’s form
Liverpool and Egypt star Salah has looked noticeably off his usual rhythm in recent games raising concerns among fans.
)
His underwhelming display in Liverpool’s 2-1 defeat to Newcastle at Wembley came just days after another quiet outing against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League, where the Egyptian forward failed to produce any meaningful contributions.
Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, Micah Richards highlighted Ramadan fasting as a possible explanation for Salah’s lack of energy, saying, "Do not forget Salah is in Ramadan now as well, where he is fasting. It is only normal that he is not going to have the same energy levels as when he can eat."
"For him to actually be on that pitch playing at that level is absolutely outstanding just to be there, you know."
)
Salah, who has not scored from open play or assisted a goal in his last four matches since Ramadan started, has seen a stark contrast to his previous form where he registered 21 open-play goals in 39 games.
Richards blames Salah-dependency for Liverpool’s struggles
Liverpool’s struggles have not been limited to Salah alone. The entire squad seemed off the pace in their Carabao Cup final loss to Newcastle, leading to speculation that their recent Champions League exit at the hands of PSG may have left a psychological impact.
)
Richards believes Salah’s importance to the team is greater than ever, but their dependence on the Egyptian has made his drop in form even more noticeable.
The ex-Manchester City star added, "I think this team is so reliant on Mo Salah. Expecting a worldie from him, a penalty, a free kick… whatever it may be. I just thought from Liverpool’s point of view, the performance was a bit flat. Maybe it was psychologically from the PSG result."
)
With an international break now upon them, Liverpool will not return to action until April 2, when Ramadan will be over. That break might give Salah the chance to regain his sharpness as the Reds push for the Premier League title in the final stretch of the season.
