Speaking at a Sport Talk Industry event, De Rossi pointed out the importance of nurturing young players with straightforward and enjoyable methods of training, instead of elaborate tactics.
De Rossi advises against going Guardiola route
De Rossi argued that the simplicity of football is often underestimated, using Ballon d’Or winner Rodri as an example of a player who excels by mastering the fundamentals.
“Football is a simple sport, but it’s hard to do simple things,” said De Rossi, adding, “Rodri plays simply. To do what he does, he must think about so many things.”
The former Italy international voiced his concern about the current trend of placing too much emphasis on tactical drills, saying, “All the coaches want to imitate Guardiola, but this takes the ball off the kids’ feet for an hour of tactical training. A kid must have challenges, play one-v-one and have fun”
De Rossi points the way forward
While cautioning against following Guardiola’s approach too closely, De Rossi acknowledged Gian Piero Gasperini as a standout figure in Italian football over the past 15 years, whose methods should be taken more seriously.
De Rossi also stressed the need for a balanced developmental approach as young players mature, adding, “As they [Young players] grow up, they’ll require a different type of work as football and all other sports demand more and more physicality.”
De Rossi was at the helm of AS Roma for nine months and two days from January 2024 to September 2024 after taking over from Jose Mourinho, before being replaced at the start of this season by Ivan Juric.
In that time, De Rossi oversaw 30 matches for his boyhood club, winning 14 of them and leading AS Roma to the semifinal of the Europa League.
