The legendary midfielder has reflected on sharing the pitch with Obafemi Martins, Nwankwo Kanu and other Super Eagles legends.

Former Kenya international Victor Wanyama has fondly reminisced about his debut match against Nigeria's legendary Super Eagles, recalling the thrill of sharing the pitch with football icons like Nwankwo Kanu and Obafemi Martins.

At just 15 years old, Wanyama made his international bow in a friendly match that paraded a star-studded Nigerian team.

Speaking to Fans Tribe during the recently concluded 2024 CAF Awards in Morocco, Wanyama reflected on the significance of that moment in his career.

"Yeah, I remember playing against the mighty Nigeria at that time with the great players, the likes of Kanu (Nwankwo), (Obafemi) Martins, (Okocha wasn’t there) and Danny Shittu. So yeah, it was a good team," he shared.

Wanyama expressed how facing such esteemed players made his debut a memorable experience.

"It was a good feeling because we really had a good game, and playing with the likes of Nwankwo and all those big players was a good experience for me to make my international debut," he added.

Obafemi Martins is among the top scorers for the Super Eagles

The match, which took place in May 2007, marked a significant milestone in Wanyama's career and set the stage for his future successes that spanned 14 years.

Since then, he has gone on to have an illustrious career, playing for clubs like Celtic, Southampton, and Tottenham Hotspur, while also captaining the Kenyan national team.

He became the skipper of the Harambee Stars in 2013 and led the team to the 2019 AFCON.

Despite playing against some of the best, especially in the English Premier League, Wanyama remains grateful for the opportunity to compete against some of Africa's greatest talents in the Super Eagles at such a young age.
