While the Tanzanian outfits have been soaring, their Kenyan rivals are largely pale shadows of their former selves.

Former Harambee Stars defender Sammy 'Pamzo'' Omollo has explained why Tanzanian giants Simba and Yanga are now more competitive than AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia.

In the CECAFA region, the Kariakoo rivals are seen as the most competitive clubs compared to their regional rivals.

Simba have been regular competitors in the CAF Champions League, while Yanga have managed to sail all the way to the final of the CAF Confederation Cup this season.

Attempting to unpack why the Tanzanian clubs have been more competitive than Ingwe and K’Ogalo, Pamzo pointed out a number of factors.

"The rivalry between Simba and Yanga is really pushing the teams to perform well. If you remember in the past when AFC and Gor Mahia were really competitive and had many players at Harambee Stars," he told Pulse Sports.

"Year in and year out, they were representing Kenya in CAF competitions, including Tusker.

"The fans will always come to the stadium when you play good football, and this is something they have that Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards do not.

"When it comes to football management, these two teams have gone to another level, and whenever they play, the stadium is always full."

Simba and Yanga have always attracted sponsors who have boosted their financial power, and Pamzo believes they have done well in accountability.

"It is also about accountability, and Simba and Yanga have very good accountability, which is why they are getting sponsorship," he added.

"But Yanga and Simba learned a lot from Gor Mahia, but we could not maintain our standards. Yanga are attracting big players from all over Africa, and this is something that was always happening at Gor Mahia.

"Gor and Leopards had good players, but now it is the other way around. When they had good players from outside, Gor Mahia were doing very well in the league and in continental competitions.

"This is also about monetary things, as good players will always be attracted to good money."

This season, no Kenyan team participated in the CAF competitions due to a previous FIFA ban.
