Fabio Carvalho signed for Brentford on a 5 year deal, marking the end of a nightmare two-year spell at the club

Fabio Carvalho’s recent transfer from Liverpool to Brentford has not only marked a new chapter in his career but also brought a touch of controversy.

The 21-year-old Portuguese winger completed his £27.5 million move to the Bees, signing a five-year contract after struggling to make an impact at Anfield.

In his first interview with Brentford, Carvalho seemed to take a subtle jab at Liverpool and their new head coach, Arne Slot.

“I just want to play football now and to do that in the best league in the world,” Carvalho stated. “As a player, you want to go somewhere where you’re wanted and somewhere where you’re loved - that’s why I’m here.”

This comment appeared to hint at his dissatisfaction with his role under Slot, who had only recently taken over at Liverpool.

Carvalho’s journey began with promise at Fulham, where his standout performances helped secure the Championship title in the 2021/22 season.

Liverpool signed him in the summer of 2022, but his time on Merseyside was underwhelming.

He scored just twice in the Premier League during his debut season and struggled to secure a regular spot in Jurgen Klopp's line-up.

A season-long loan to RB Leipzig followed, but Carvalho failed to make a significant impact in the Bundesliga.

His fortunes improved during a half-season loan at Hull City, where he netted nine times in the Championship. This resurgence perhaps caught Brentford’s attention, leading to his transfer.

At Brentford, Carvalho is expected to provide the creative spark that head coach Thomas Frank believes the team needs.

Frank praised Carvalho’s technical skills and work ethic, highlighting how his unique abilities will bolster the squad.

"He has great abilities on the ball: he can go past players, slide a pass, create chances and get on the end of chances," said Brentford head coach Thomas Frank.

"He's a type of player that we don't have many of in the squad so he will add that something extra for us. "His ability and mentality to work hard in the pressure is also very, very good. That's along with him ticking all the boxes from a cultural perspective and being the right character. So we're very pleased to see him come in and push the team forward."

Carvalho will be aiming to prove Liverpool wrong when the two side meet at Anfield on Sunday 25th August.
