Falconets begin WAFU journey in Ghana

The girls will take on the Niger Republic in the first match of Group B on Sunday.

The Super Falconets of Nigeria will begin their journey in the WAFU B U20 Women’s Championship in Kumasi, Ghana.

Super Falconets Squad

Pulse Sports reported that the Nigerian girls landed in Kumasi on Thursday afternoon, and trained at the Baba Yara Stadium on Friday morning.

Coach Chris Danjuma has picked a number of the ladies who steered the squad to the last-eight finish at the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup finals in Costa Rica in August last year, and included as well some members of the bronze medal-winning U17 girls from last year’s FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup in India.

Nigeria's U-20 girls are paired in group B with Niger Republic, Burkina Faso, and Togo, while hosts, Ghana will slug it out with Benin Republic and Cote d'Ivoire in group A.

The Falconets, the most successful U-20 women's team in Africa, will begin their campaign against the Niger Republic on May 21 at the Baba Yara Stadium before facing Togo on May 24 and Burkina Faso on May 23 in their final group match.

20 Players set for WAFU B

Nigeria's Super Falconets Head Coach Chris Danjuma has selected midfielders Taiwo Afolabi and Esther Onyenezide and forwards Flourish Sebastine and Opeyemi Ajakaye.

Danjuma, who steered the Nigerian girls to the last eight of last year’s World Cup in Costa Rica, picked goalkeeper Inyene Etim, defenders Comfort Folorunsho and Jumoke Alani, midfielders Chioma Olise and Blessing Emmanuel, and forwards Omowunmi Bello and Goodness Osigwe.

Also part of the team is Taiwo Afolabi, Comfort Folorunsho, Opeyemi Ajakaye, and Blessing Emmanuel, who are part of Nigeria's U-17 girls’ team that won bronze medals at last year’s FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup finals in India.
