The Nigerian forward was subjected to racist abuse while in Spain with Villarreal
A fan who racially abused Real Madrid's Vinicius Jr. and former Villarreal's Samuel Chukwueze at Mallorca's Son Moix stadium has been handed a suspended prison sentence.
Mallorca fan sentenced to prison
The unnamed Mallorca fan was given a 12-month suspended sentence after issuing an apology and completing anti-discrimination training, with a three-year ban from stadiums also imposed.
The fan’s 12-month prison sentence was suspended after he expressed remorse in a letter addressed to the Real Madrid star.
Additionally, the offender completed anti-discrimination training as part of the court's rehabilitation measures in exchange for a shorter sentence.
Despite the apology, the perpetrator has been barred from attending any football stadiums for the next three years.
Nigerians at the mercy of racist fans
Now at AC Milan, Chukwueze spent six years in Spain with Villarreal and was no stranger to the caustic nature of fans in the Spanish top flight.
While the Super Eagles forward has been granted some justice following the sentencing of the anonymous Mallorca fan, other Nigerian players in the league continue to suffer at the hands of fans eager to divide players across racial lines.
Getafe’s Nigerian midfielder Chrisantus Uche recently brought up issues that he faced with fans who racially taunted him in Spain, but was shut down by his own club president, who insisted that the Super Eagles hopeful must have been mistaken since he does not speak Spanish.
