Ghanaian students defeated their UNILAG counterparts in the first game of the football event at the ongoing University Games in Lagos.
The 11th FASU Games kicked off with a thrilling encounter between the University of Lagos (UNILAG) Marines and the University for Development Studies (UDS), Ghana.
UDS emerged victorious with a 1-0 scoreline, thanks to a spectacular volley by George Renchi.

UDS, the visiting team in Group B, got off to a strong start, captivating the audience at the University of Lagos Sports Center with their attacking prowess.
UNILAG responded by seizing control of the midfield with smooth passing exchanges, putting pressure on the Ghanaian defence.
A golden opportunity came for UNILAG to take the lead when a UDS player conceded a penalty for handball but when striker Doyin Omotosho stepped up to take the spot-kick, the UDS goalkeeper produced a magnificent save to deny the home team.

Africa University Games (FASU) flag off in Lagos
Over 5000 students from 40 African universities are in Lagos for the 11th All African University co-hosted by the University of Lagos and Lagos State University.
The scoreless stalemate continued into the break as both sides searched for a breakthrough. UNILAG nearly found the net early in the second half when Samuel, a key player, broke past a UDS defender, but his shot went wide.
The tide began to turn in the second half as UDS displayed their technical skills and creativity, taking more control of the game. Their dominance culminated in a stunning goal by George Renchi.
From outside the midfield, Renchi unleashed a powerful volley that surprised the UNILAG goalkeeper and nestled into the back of the net, leaving both the crowd and the opposing team speechless.

UDS held on to their lead, securing a crucial 1-0 victory in the opening match.
Renchi sets sights on FASU Title
Elated about scoring the winning goal, Renchi expressed his team's determination to win the entire tournament.
"We finished third two years ago in Kenya, and this year, we're determined to go even further. I'm thrilled to have scored that goal—I saw the keeper was slightly off his line and decided to go for it," he said.
Meanwhile, Lagos State University and the defending champions Kenyatta University from Kenya shared the spoils in the second game of the opening day.
