The manager has come to the defence of the bulky Nigerian striker after he hit the winner in the 4-3 comeback victory against Dundee United despite huge criticism from several quarters.

Rangers head coach Barry Ferguson rose to the defence of Cyril Dessers after watching his striker finally score the winning goal after having up to 12 scoring opportunities in the game

The Super Eagles forward has received a lot of stick from fans and the media for the number of chances he misses, despite scoring 23 goals in 46 appearances at the club this season.

The striker has scored 45 goals for Rangers in 100 appearances since joining from Cremonese two seasons ago.

Ferguson hails Dessers’s mental strength

The coach was pleased with the mental fortitude of the striker, who found a way to score despite missing several chances beforehand.

"You have to give the goalkeeper credit; he made some really good saves,” Ferguson said. But one thing about the big man: he has been a joy to work with, and he is a brilliant worker.

"A brilliant listener, he wants to improve even at his age. He puts himself in brilliant positions; he can get frustrated and start feeling sorry for himself, but he keeps going.  He got his reward with the winner.

The coach admired how Dessers finds a way to shut out criticism.

"If he got criticism from fans or the media, the big man just rolls his sleeves up. I didn’t think it would affect him, and it never affected him; he kept going. If you have that type of character, then you get your rewards in the end."

The Gers are 13 points behind league leaders Celtic but are still in contention for the Europa League, where they will play a two-legged quarter-final tie against Spanish side Athletic Bilbao on April 13 and 17, respectively.
