Ruud van Nistelrooy has slammed a controversial offside decision that cost Leicester City a place in the FA Cup fifth round.

Leicester City manager Ruud van Nistelrooy has expressed his outrage at a missed offside decision that cost his team a place in the FA Cup fifth round.

What happened?

Harry Maguire's 93rd-minute winner for Manchester United in the fourth-round tie should have been disallowed for offside, but the linesman failed to spot the infringement.

The centre-back's winner completed the Red Devils' second-half turnaround, with Joshua Zirkzee levelling for Ruben Amorim’s team in the 68th minute after Bobby De Cordova-Reid put the Foxes 1-0 ahead just before the interlude.

Van Nistelrooy was furious with the officials, claiming that the decision was "clear" and "not good enough". He believes that the mistake robbed Leicester of a deserved draw and a chance to progress in the competition.

“We were not defeated in Fergie time. We were defeated in ‘offside time’. This wasn’t necessary,” said the Leicester boss and former United striker.

“VAR you have for (an offside that is) a couple of centimetres, inches. This was half a metre, clear and in line. It’s a hard one to take because the team deserved the draw.

“With extra time, if you stay in the game, you never know what happens. It was a really good team performance. We started really well, pressing United, on the ball very stable. We deserved to go 1-0 up at half-time.

“Of course, we knew that there would be some pressure on us in the second half and some chances, but not even that much. So we deserved to go into extra time and go into the battle for extra time and maybe penalties. So decisions like this, at our level, are hard to swallow.”

The incident has sparked debate about the use of VAR in the FA Cup. VAR is not currently used in the early rounds of the competition, but Van Nistelrooy hinted that it should be introduced to prevent similar mistakes from happening in the future.

“It’s a hard one to take because the game was decided on a mistake,” said the Dutchman. “It was clear. It’s not a matter of VAR where you have to look millimeters, it was half a meter, it was clear.

“The team didn’t deserve to lose the game in this way because they fought and they played well. It’s one, you can’t turn it back so we have to live with it.

“We’re all humans and make mistakes but at this level that’s not good enough. That’s it and for me. There’s enough to be said about it.”

What next for Manchester United?

United progressed to the fifth round thanks to Maguire's controversial goal. The Red Devils are next in action on Sunday, February 16, when they travel to Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League.
