Football Kenya Federation empowers women's football with workshops and club licensing, setting a positive example for athlete health and professionalism.

The world football governing body FIFA has recognized the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) for its mission to champion the growth of women's football in the country.

Celebrating the fifth anniversary of FIFA's Women's Football Strategy, the FKF unveiled its own strategy in July 2021, signaling a promising new era for women's football in the country.

Among the groundbreaking efforts, the FKF has taken the lead in hosting workshops as part of FIFA's Women's Development Programme, with a strong focus on upskilling physiotherapists working in women's football.

These workshops aim to elevate the standards of physiotherapy care for players in the FKF Women's Premier League (FKF WPL) and the FKF Women's National Super League (FKF WNSL).

The primary objective is to ensure that female players have access to professionally trained physiotherapists who can provide comprehensive care, from injury assessment to diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation.

Dr. Nonhlanhla Mkumbuzi, who led one of the workshops, praised Kenya's commitment to safeguarding female athlete health.

"We don't take it for granted that they know. We don't take it for granted that they find the information. But making that conscious effort of prepping and capacitating their medics, that the people who manage female athletes with education and female athlete's health, I think that is commendable in allowing them the space and allowing the opportunity to have that education," Dr. Mkumbuzi stated as per FIFA.com.

In a subsequent initiative, the FKF organized the first club licensing workshop for the FKF Women Premier League clubs for the 2023/24 season.

This three-day workshop brought together officials from the 12 clubs, providing them with an overview of the club licensing process. The focus was on various criteria, including legal, infrastructure, youth development, financial stability, and administrative capabilities that clubs will have to meet in the future.

The primary goal of this workshop is to enhance the professionalization of women's football at the club level while simultaneously improving the sporting infrastructure and economic performance of these clubs.

Michael Senelwa, Co-Founder and Executive Chairman of the Vihiga Queens, a club with a rich heritage in East Africa, emphasized the positive impact of club licensing.

"I see club licensing as a step in the right direction. It ensures fair financial practices and discipline. It encourages us to ensure a safe working environment for our players. It is our responsibility to ensure that we guard and protect our vulnerable groups. It's about where players play, things like infrastructure - not only for the benefit of the players - but also how clubs can use it as a source of revenue now," Senelwa remarked.

Financial stability emerged as a critical aspect of women's football development during a football-specific course titled 'Understand Your Club's Finances.' This course, designed for football administrators, focused on topics like balance sheets, budgeting, and cash flow. It was developed in collaboration with Xero, a small business accounting software provider and a FIFA Women's Football Partner.

James Kyd, Global Head of Brand Strategy and Marketing at Xero, spoke about the importance of supporting women's football's financial viability.

"Through our partnership with FIFA, we are working together to support the growth of the women's game. Given Xero's expertise, we wanted to offer a course focusing on understanding club finances to administrators who play such an important role in the women's football community. This is important as we know that better numbers off the field mean better numbers on the field," he said.

The FKF's proactive approach to promoting women's football in Kenya through education, professionalization, and financial sustainability is not only commendable but also promises a brighter future for women athletes in the country.

With the recent workshops and club licensing initiatives, the FKF is paving the way for women's football to thrive and flourish on and off the pitch. Kenya's dedication to women's football is setting a shining example for other nations to follow, ensuring that the beautiful game continues to grow and prosper for all.
