Mildred Cheche has voiced confidence in the Junior Starlets’ readiness as they prepare for a crucial Spain training camp.

Junior Starlets head coach Mildred Cheche is set to unveil the final squad that will travel to Spain for an intensive training camp starting on September 19.

This camp is part of the team's preparations for the 2024 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup, where they will make their historic debut.

The global tournament will be held in the Dominican Republic from October 16 to November 3.

With just weeks remaining before their first-ever World Cup appearance, the Junior Starlets are currently in their second week of rigorous training in Nairobi.

Cheche has been keen on fine-tuning her squad and ensuring they are fully prepared for the challenges ahead.

Speaking during a press conference ahead of the squad announcement, Cheche expressed optimism about the team's readiness while acknowledging the areas that still need improvement.

"For the camp, we are doing well, all the players are ready. We are ready to go to Spain and continue the preparation. So far we've improved on several areas that we had gaps and also strengthened the team," said Cheche.

The Spain camp is expected to be a crucial part of the team's journey to the World Cup, as they will face top European clubs and teams in friendly matches.

"It's very important to prepare the players for the World Cup stage because playing internationally is different from playing regionally or through East Africa. So now they are going to play the best of the best in the World Cup and we need them prepared. So playing against better teams in Spain will prepare them fully for the World Cup," she added.

Cheche also shared her thoughts on the key areas of focus ahead of the camp, emphasizing the need for her players to develop mental toughness and adaptability on the field.

"There are several areas that we have to fine-tune, but what we have to do mostly is to ensure that we try and win our matches with the World Cup. I understand Campy and Kasarani, you called the five players so far, I can see that you've done some training. Tell us what you've learned," she said during the media briefing.

The Junior Starlets earned their place in the 2024 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup after a resounding victory over Burundi in the qualification rounds.

Their dominant 5-0 aggregate win in June, which included a 2-0 triumph in the final leg, made them the first Kenyan team to ever qualify for a FIFA World Cup at any level.

The Junior Starlets have been drawn into a challenging Group C for the tournament.

They will face England in their opening match on October 18, followed by a tough encounter with Korea DPR on October 20.

They will wrap up their group-stage fixtures against Mexico on October 24, 2024.
