Ipswich Town's Sammie Szmodics recreated Finidi George's iconic overhead kick against Tottenham.

Ipswich had an impressive record against Tottenham, having won their last three games against the Lily Whites.

They extended that record today, when, thanks to goals from Sammie Szmodics and Liam Delap, they defeated Ange Postecoglou's side 2-1, a result that elicits a feeling of deja vu from fans of the Tractor Boys in more ways than one.

The last time the Suffolk-based side were in the Premier League, the 2001/02 season, they achieved a double against Spurs, with 2-1 as the result of both games in that campaign.

Also, Szmodics' goal, the opener in today's match, mirrored Finidi George’s goal against Tottenham from that season.

Szmodics brings Finidi to the fore

The 29-year-old midfielder opened the scoring for Kieran McKenna’s side earlier today with a stunning overhead kick after a delivery from ex-Manchester City man Delap.

The goal was the start of a journey to a 2-1 victory, similar to Finidi’s strike in 2001. Not only did the former Super Eagles coach also score an overhead kick, capitalising on lax defending from Tottenham after a corner kick, his goal was also the first in a clash that ended 2-1.

The similarities do not end there, as the match in which Finidi scored the brilliant goal was at White Hart Lane, Tottenham's home ground. While they no longer host their home games in that stadium, it was still a home clash at the new Tottenham Hotspur stadium, where they were beaten by Szmodics and Delap’s goals.
