Five-star Chelsea show title credential as they thrash Southampton

Chelsea were ruthless against Southampton as they continued their pursuit for the Premier League title.

The Blues head into the game looking confident after a comfortable victory over Aston Villa at the weekend.

Having defeated Villa, they did a decent job thrashing Southampton 5-1 to continue their good run of form.

As it happened

Chelsea have made seven changes for their trip to Southampton, with Filip Jorgensen.

Malo Gusto, Axel Disasi, Tosin Adarabioyo, Noni Madueke, Joao Felix and Christopher Nkunku are all on the starting lineup.

Super Eagles star Joe Aribo made the starting lineup, but fellow countryman Paul Onuachu missed out through injury.

Chelsea started the game with so much confidence and scored the first goal from a corner kick. Enzo Fernandez whipped in a corner and Axel Disasi got to it before the Southampton goalkeeper, nodding in from close range.

Southampton responded immediately with the equaliser when Kyle Walker-Peters turned past Enzo Fernandez on the byeline and cut the ball back for Joe Aribo, who has an easy finish to level.

A silly error from the home side gave the visitors the lead again. Joe Lumley is about 20 yards out when his pass is intercepted by Noni Madueke.

The Chelsea forward latched on to the ball, played in Christopher Nkunku, and the Frenchman tapped into an open net.

The third goal went in before Jack Stephens was shown a straight red card. Noni Madueke picked the ball up out on the right, cut inside and curled one into the bottom far corner.

The game ended in a comfortable victory for Chelsea as they move over Arsenal to second place on the table.
