FKF Premier League match called off due to inclement weather

A top-flight FKF Premier League match was postponed due to heavy rain and unsafe pitch conditions caused by poor drainage and lightning.

The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League match between Gor Mahia and KCB Football Club was called off after the match officials deemed the playing surface at Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos unplayable due to heavy rains that fell just before kickoff.

A torrential downpour just moments before the scheduled 16h00 start rendered the pitch waterlogged, with pools forming across critical areas of the field.

Despite efforts by the ground staff, the lack of a proper drainage system at the venue meant conditions were unsafe for players.

Lightning was reported in the vicinity, prompting the match commissioner to prioritize player safety by postponing the encounter.

The storm around the venue, coupled with inadequate drainage and safety concerns, forced officials to abandon the match before kickoff.

Unlike previous protocols where play would resume once storms cleared, new FIFA safety regulations now mandate a specific minimum distance for lightning from the stadium before a match can proceed.

This has led to more conservative decisions from match officials in stormy weather.

"This is about the safety of the players and fairness of the competition. There was simply no way to play football on that pitch today,” said an official close to the FKF Premier League match committee.

The Gor Mahia vs. KCB fixture had been highly anticipated, not just for its impact on the title race, but also because it followed a dramatic week within the Gor Mahia technical bench.

A truce was reached just a day earlier between head coach Sinisa Mihic and members of his staff following internal tensions that had threatened team unity.

“We met as a play unit on Saturday (yesterday) morning and they apologised, so as a human being and out of love, I have accepted them back into the team. I felt pain and came out publicly and they have also felt the pain of their action when I spoke to the media and were remorseful,” said Mihic in a phone interview with Nation Sport.

Mihic, who joined the club on a six-month contract in February, had accused his assistant coach Michael Nam and team manager Victor Nyaoro of backstabbing and blackmail during a heated exchange at training earlier in the week.

The confrontation had resulted in the pair being sent away from the session held at Stima Club in Nairobi.

Club chairman Ambrose Rachier later confirmed the resolution of the dispute and ruled out any disciplinary action.

“Today (yesterday), the head coach apologised to the entire team for his outburst and they amicably resolved the matter, so there is no crisis at Gor,” said Rachier.

Gor Mahia went into the match sitting third with 43 points and KCB close behind at fourth with 40 points—the postponement means added pressure as fixtures pile up in the final weeks of the season.

A new date for the rescheduled clash is expected to be announced soon by FKF.
