FKFPL Golden Boot: Nothing to separate Benson Omala & Tito Okello as battles goes to the wire

Gor Mahia striker Benson Omala and Kenya Police’s Tito Okello seem determined to take the battle for the Golden Boot award to the very end as both of them are tied on goals.

Gor Mahia forward Benson Omala and his Kenya Police counterpart Tito Okello are still neck-and-neck in the race for the FKF Premier League Golden Boot award.

Omala and Okello are tied on 16 goals each heading into the final two games of the season following contrasting fortunes for the two forwards at the weekend.

The Gor Mahia striker headed into the weekend with a one-goal advantage over Okello but with Sylvester Owino’s goal handing K’Ogalo a 1-0 win against Sofapaka on Sunday, the Police man closed in when he opened the scoring as his side drew 2-2 with Murang’a Seal on the same day.

It leaves the battle still open ahead of the penultimate round of matches on Wednesday before the season finale on Sunday.

Gor Mahia, who have already been crowned champions, will face FC Talanta on Wednesday before completing the season away to Bidco United on Sunday while Police host both Bandari and Kariobangi Sharks on the two days.

That is the only remaining opportunity for either striker to grab the top scorers’ accolade and if they do not take advantage, then Sharks’ marksman John Makwwata could dislodge them, as he is just two goals behind with as many games to go.

Omala will be hoping that lightning does not strike twice after leading the scoring charts for large parts of last season before losing the prestigious award to Elvis Rupia, then of Kenya Police.

The Gor Mahia man bagged a record-equaling 26 goals but Rupia broke the 47-year record by scoring 27.

Okello, meanwhile, is seeking to make it back-to-back delight for Kenya Police as he follows in the footsteps of Rupia.

Something else to note this season is that strikers have found it hard unlike in 2022-23 and it looks like none of the leading scorers will hit the 20-goal mark this time round.
