Following Barcelona’s 5-2 dismantling of their arch-rivals in the Spanish Super Cup final, Flick has achieved a record-breaking milestone, surpassing the legendary Pep Guardiola’s early success in these iconic fixtures.
Barcelona hammer Real Madrid to claim Super Cup glory
The Super Cup clash in Jeddah began promisingly for Real Madrid, with Kylian Mbappe firing Los Blancos into an early lead in the fifth minute.
However, Barcelona fought back bravely, scoring five goals to secure their first trophy of the season and the first of the Flick era.
Lamine Yamal ignited the comeback with a sensational equaliser, followed by Robert Lewandowski’s penalty after a foul by Eduardo Camavinga.
Raphinha then powered home a header to make it 3-1 before Alejandro Balde finished a brilliant team move, sending Barcelona into halftime with a commanding 4-1 lead.
Raphinha added his second goal in the second half to make it 5-1, and although Wojciech Szczęsny’s red card allowed Rodrygo to score a consolation free-kick goal, the outcome was never in doubt as Barcelona cruised to victory.
Flick’s record-breaking El Clasico start
Barcelona’s stellar performance was the latest example of Hansi Flick’s exceptional start in El Clasico matches.
According to statistician MisterChip, Flick has now overseen an aggregate scoreline of 9-2 across his first two encounters with Real Madrid, edging past Guardiola’s initial 8-2 record in the fixture.
Guardiola set the standard for dominance over Real Madrid during his tenure, winning his first two matches against Los Blancos 2-0 and 6-2.
However, Flick’s early success in Clasicos has surpassed Guardiola’s tally after a 4-0 win at the Bernabeu earlier in the season was followed by the 5-2 Super Cup win.
As the season progresses, the Catalans will look to build on this momentum, with their Super Cup triumph serving as a clear statement of intent.
