Teams from East and Central Africa converge in Nairobi for CECAFA Zonal CAF African Schools Football Championship qualifiers set to kickoff on Monday.

Teams from across East and Central Africa have begun to descend upon Nairobi ahead of upcoming CECAFA Zonal CAF African Schools Football Championship qualifiers.

The competition, set to take place from December 10th to 13th, 2023, will showcase the skills of under-15 boys and girls from six nations in the region.

The Kasarani Annex in Nairobi is where the dreams of these budding football stars will unfold, making it a spectacle that is not to be missed.

Two teams each from Uganda and Burundi arrived in Nairobi on Friday, eager to make their mark on the tournament.

The arrival of the boys' team from Somalia, who jetted in yesterday, added to the growing excitement. Yussuf Mossi, the Competitions Director of the Council of East and Central African Football Associations (CECAFA), shared insights into the schedule.

"The teams will train on Sunday, and action kicks off on Monday," he said.

This year, the competition organizers have decided to adopt a league-based format, ensuring that the participating teams have the opportunity to play as many matches as possible.

"We decided that the six teams in the boys' category and the five in the girls' category would play the League format," Mosi explained.

The lineup for the Zonal qualifiers includes Kenya, Burundi, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, and Somalia.

However, Eritrea, Sudan, and South Sudan have opted to withdraw from the Pan African Schools Championship CECAFA Zonal Qualifiers.

The winners in each category will secure the coveted opportunity to represent the Zone at the CAF African Schools Championship, scheduled for April next year.

Last year, Tanzania's Fountain Gate Dodoma Secondary School and Uganda's Royal Giant High School emerged as champions in the girls' and boys' categories respectively during the Zonal qualifiers held in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Fountain Gate Dodoma Secondary School went on to clinch the Girls category title at the CAF African Schools Championship held in Durban, South Africa, in April of this year.
