FOOTBALL Football legends demand IEBC to conduct FKF elections

Ex-footballers have demanded that the IEBC oversee the FKF elections set for October this year.

The eagerly anticipated Football Kenya Federation (FKF) elections have become the center of a heated debate as former footballers demand a significant overhaul of the electoral process.

On Wednesday, the Kenya Soccer Players Association (KESPA) made a bold statement in a press briefing, criticizing FKF's decision to use the same Electoral Code that was employed in the 2020 polls.

KEPSA President Harold Ndege argued that the current code unfairly disadvantages potential candidates and inherently benefits the existing FKF leadership.

"We believe the code is designed to have a winner before the commencement of the elections, by denying the citizens of this country—who fund the FKF through their taxes—the opportunity to seek leadership within the federation," he said.

Adding to the controversy, Ndege highlighted the broader implications of proceeding with the controversial Electoral Code.

"We also believe that if we continue to allow such illegalities to persist, we will be perpetuating bad governance, inherited from previous and current election-plus administrations at FKF.

"This means it will erode the confidence of Kenyan football stakeholders and, hence, continue to dwindle the standards of Kenyan football," he added.

The call for reform was further bolstered by the presence of notable figures such as former Harambee Stars striker Dennis Oliech, retired FIFA referee David Gikonyo, and ex-footballer Frank Ogolla, who stood in solidarity with Ndege during the briefing.

The FKF National Executive Committee, however, seems to be moving forward with the contentious Electoral Code of 2020, having passed a resolution on January 6 to conduct the polls under its framework.

This decision has set the stage for a potentially contentious Annual General Meeting (AGM) scheduled for March 16, where FKF delegates are expected to ratify and adopt the electoral code.

In a firm rebuke of the current plans, Ndege advocated for a significant overhaul of the election process.

"We are demanding that the FKF elections of 2024 be conducted by an independent body. The only independent body within the jurisdiction of the Republic of Kenya is the Independent Electoral and Boundary Commission of Kenya (IEBC)," he declared.
