A former Man City star has acknowledged the impact of Pep Guardiola in his career.
Former Manchester City defender Joao Cancelo has opened up about his public disagreement with Pep Guardiola, admitting that while they had their differences during their time together at the Etihad Stadium, he still regards the Spaniard as a “genius.”
The Portuguese full-back, who joined Manchester City in 2019, played a crucial role in the club’s domestic success, winning three Premier League titles, an FA Cup, and a League Cup.

Cancelo expressed frustration over his reduced playing time, which led to his mid-season loan move to Bayern Munich in January 2023.
Following that stint, the 30-year-old spent another loan spell at Barcelona before making a permanent move to Al Hilal in Saudi Arabia last summer.
Speaking to Canal 11 via beIN SPORTS, Cancelo explained the situation, saying:
)
“We had differences, not a clash, we had different opinions. I have a very strong personality. He does too, but he's the one in charge.
"We went our separate ways, but I thank God for having worked with him.”
Despite their disagreements, Cancelo credited Guardiola for significantly influencing his footballing development.

“[Inverted full-backs] was a lot of merit and work from Guardiola, it made me see football in a different way. For me, he is a genius, impeccable and he changed the way I see the game today,” Cancelo was quoted to have said.
After parting ways with Manchester City, Cancelo opted to join Saudi Pro League giants Al Hilal, despite receiving interest from several European clubs.
Explaining his decision, he stated: “I didn't want to continue at Manchester City and they didn't want me to continue.

"So there were a number of reasons [for signing for Al Hilal]. There were a few clubs interested in Europe, but Al Hilal was always the club that was most interested.”
Since joining Al Hilal, Cancelo has made 31 appearances and remains a key figure in the Portugal national team.
