Nigeria's goalkeeper is happy to be in the Super Eagles post for the first time in two years.
Nigerian goalkeeper Maduka Okoye has expressed his unwavering pride in representing the Super Eagles, even after a disappointing return to the national team.
Following a two-year absence, Okoye stepped in for first-choice goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, who was excused from the squad due to his father's recent passing.

This marked an important moment for Okoye, who played his first match for Nigeria in two years during a crucial Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Rwanda.
Despite Okoye's enthusiasm, the match ended in a surprising 2-1 defeat for Nigeria, leading to criticism from fans who attributed the loss to his performance.
Many expressed their discontent on social media, with some harshly claiming he "did not have a brain" after he conceded a preventable second goal that allowed Rwanda to secure victory.
In response to the backlash and the match's outcome, Okoye took to social media three days later to share his sentiments.
His message reflects a deep commitment to the Nigerian national team, emphasising that wearing the Super Eagles colours remains a significant honour for him.
“Despite the result I’m more than happy and grateful to have played in this jersey again,: Okoye stated on Instagram.
“It has always been, it is and it will forever be an honour to represent Nigeria,” he added.
Fortunately for Nigeria, this defeat did not jeopardise their chances for AFCON 2025 qualification, as they had already secured their spot as group winners with two games remaining.
Nonetheless, the Super Eagles under Augustine Eguavoen have struggled recently, managing only one point from their last two matches in the qualifiers.
This has raised concerns amongst the supporters who were left unimpressed and unsatisfied with what they saw from the team, with calls for better performances heading into next year’s AFCON in 2025.
Meanwhile, Okoye is expected to return to Italy where he has looked in inspired form for Serie A side Udinese despite three consecutive defeats leading to the last international break.
The Eagles goalkeeper will be hoping to help his club return to winning ways when they take on Empoli this weekend as club football returns following the break.
