Former Nigeria youth international Akinkunmi Amoo has had his appeal against a conviction for sexual assault and attempted sexual denied by a court in Denmark.

Amoo’s promising career halted by crime

Once a promising talent for the Super Eagles, Amoo began his European career with Swedish club Hammarby after signing from Sidos FC in the summer of 2020. His potential was evident, and his performances soon earned him a move to FC Copenhagen two years later. However, Amoo's football career took a dark turn as he found himself entangled in serious legal issues in Denmark.

Last year, Amoo was part of a police investigation that led to his conviction in the Copenhagen district court for rape and attempted rape. The court handed down a sentence of one year in prison, followed by deportation with a six-year entry ban to Denmark. Additionally, Amoo was ordered to cover court costs exceeding 100,000 Danish kroner, approximately 150,000 Swedish kronor.

Amoo and his representatives chose to appeal the conviction, hoping for a different outcome. However, Danish media outlet Ekstra Bladet recently reported that the Court of Appeal rejected Amoo's appeal, making the rape conviction final.

Jesper Jansson, who initially recruited Amoo to Hammarby and later facilitated his controversial transfer to Cypriot club Omonia from Copenhagen, spoke about helping the Nigerian striker leave Denmark, saying, "Everything was very, very open, partly in the dialogue with FCK, partly in the dialogue with Amoo and not least within Omonia. It was completely open cards as far as that was concerned.”

Following the appeal court's rejection, Amoo's lawyer, Mette Maria Lorentzen, expressed their disappointment and revealed their intention to seek further legal recourse. "We are sorry for the appeal court's rejection and will seek permission to appeal the case in the Supreme Court," Lorentzen told Ekstra Bladet.

Amoo’s career has hit a stumbling block since the conviction and even a move to Omonia has not panned out as the Nigerian striker also terminated what was supposed to be a three-year contract after only five appearances for the Cypriot club.
