The England international has opened up about the real reason behind his departure from the North London club this summer.

The 26-year-old joined Southampton in a £25 million move, seeking more playing time after being relegated to the bench at Arsenal following the arrival of David Raya from Brentford.

There was a lot of noise surrounding his departure, with rumours flying around on why he left a top-two club in the league for one that just gained promotion.

However, he had addressed the issue and clarified the reason behind the move.

The Gunners have come close to lifting the Premier League in the last two seasons, and Ramsdale was part of the journey.

However, the goalkeeper has revealed that winning it while on the bench would not have meant much to him.

"If I was sitting on the bench, it [winning a trophy] wouldn't have meant that much to me," Ramsdale admitted in an interview with BBC One's Football Focus.

"I just wanted to play football. As a kid, I wanted to play football to play, not to just sit on a bench."

The move to Southampton has provided Ramsdale with the opportunity to start regularly in the Premier League. He has already made four appearances for the Saints, who are currently battling relegation.

As Southampton prepare to face their former club Arsenal on Saturday, October 5th, Ramsdale will be eager to prove his worth and show that his decision to leave was the right one.
