A solitary goal was enough for Homeboyz to dislodge Tusker and claim the trophy.

Former Gor Mahia national treasurer Sally Bolo has lauded Kakamega Homeboyz after beating Tusker in the Football Kenya Federation Cup final on Sunday.

A goal by Kevin Amwayi in the second half ensured the Homeboyz picked up their maiden trophy and marched to continental football. But it was how they played that caught Bolo's eye.

"Congratulations to Kakamega Homeboyz for winning the 2023 Mozzart Bet Cup with a 1-0 victory over Tusker FC.  I did confirm the reasons why their chairman, Mr. Toto [Cleophas Shimanyula], is always sure about upsetting and/or beating top teams," Bolo said on Twitter.

"I had the opportunity to watch the Kakamega Homeboyz play; they had a purpose and knew what they were doing. The boys are talented, aggressive, not selfish, and play as a team."

Patrick Baraza's charges will now get a chance to test themselves against some of the best clubs in Africa. Although it will be their maiden appearance, keen eyes will want to see whether they can do better than Bandari did in 2019, also in their debut appearance.

The Dockers were eliminated in the playoffs by Guinean giants AC Horoya.

"To the head coach and his technical staff, congratulations. My conclusion is that the better team won the match today [Sunday]. Besides, they have mental strength. Good luck to them during the CAF Confederation Cup matches," added Bolo.

As Homeboyz will be doing duty in Africa's second club tier, Gor Mahia will be brushing shoulders with the Champions League clubs after winning the league and making a return to the continental stage.
