Manchester United legend Phil Jones has officially announced his retirement from football.

After departing Old Trafford at the end of the 2022–2023 season, the 32-year-old has not appeared on the pitch.

It has been almost two years since he last played a ball, which was in a 3-0 victory against Brentford twelve months ago.

The England international has decided to call an end to his career following a successful stint at Man United.

Jones told BBC Radio 5 Live, as reported by the Sun, "My career finished shorter than I would have liked.

"I'm glass half full. I have completed my A licence and I want to get out there and challenge myself in coaching. Ultimately I want to take charge of a team. I am determined to get there."

Jones, who has 27 appearances for England and 229 appearances for United, came from Blackburn to United in 2011, although he had a long career of injuries.

In his final season as manager of the United during his twelve years there, Jones won the Premier League title in 2013.

He added, "I did everything I could to return to playing but with so many rehabs I was coming back from, it has an effect on you and your family."

Jones was well-known for his distinctive defence technique, which frequently turned him into a humorous character among supporters.

The Manchester United player's contract concluded in September of last year, and he took on the position of youth coach at Carrington.
