Former Manchester United's attacking coach Benni McCarthy has laid bare the reaasons behind Marcus Rashford's poor form infront of goal.

Marcus Rashford has seen intense criticism thrown his way following repeated spells without finding the back of the net.

This season, his form and that of his club Manchester United have been off as they have struggled to live up to expectations.

Manager Erik ten Hag recently explained that the team's main problem is a lack of belief and it seems it is not just a collective but also affecting individuals.

South African legend, Benni McCarthy, who worked at United as attacking coach in the last two years, has shared the same about the club's golden boy Marcus Rashford.

McCarthy worked closely with Rashford and other attackers at the club and has now laid bare the problems affecting the forward's form, having seen him bag a record 30 goals in the 2022-23 season before he dipped last term.

"Just calmness. Marcus was calm, he didn't have a worry in the world. I think right now he worries too much on the outside. What's been said, what's been done and what's going on. I think if he can just refocus himself back to that Marcus who was just carefully coming to training loved being at training, loved wanting to improve wanting to work on all things. And then I think as time went by he started deteriorating because of the noise around," McCarthy told On the Whistle Podcast.

"All that is a factor and it's kind of a mental block where you end up being there but you don't play to the ability and your full potential and he needs to get himself back there where he is able to block everything."

"He needs just to be able to refocus and be able to just block out everything and just start playing like you were in the academy where everything you do you do because it comes from the heart and I think he lost a little bit of that."

McCarthy expressed a bit of dissapointment, recalling the happy days at Manchester United. "When I watch Manchester United now I don't see the player that I used to work with, who used to do incredible things. I just see a player that's not himself."
