Nigeria’s Super Eagles are set for a new dispensation under Jose Peseiro when they rekindle their friendly rivalry with Mexico.

Mexico is set to take on Nigeria’s senior national team the Super Eagles again in an international friendly at the AT & T Stadium in Texas.

The Mexicans will go into this particular encounter on the back of an unbeaten run dating back to last year.

El Tri begin their build-up to the World Cup slated for later this month with what will be their first game since booking their tickets for the football fiesta in Qatar.

For Nigeria, on the other hand, the Super Eagles are ushering in a new life under the managerial guidance of Jose Peseiro, who was confirmed as the new man to take over as the permanent boss of the team from Gernot Rohr.

The Super Eagles will go into the encounter looking to kick start their rebuilding process in a positive way after Ghana ended the dream to be at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Form Guide

In terms of their forms, the EL Tri are unbeaten in their last eight matches, a run that dates back to December 9, 2021.

Mexico have won four and drawn four of their last eight matches in all competitions.

Their last defeat came in that 2-1 loss to Canada in the World Cup qualifiers back in November 21, 2021.

For Nigeria, while the Super Eagles will be missing from the World Cup party later this year, they have only lost one of their last nine matches.

That solitary defeat came in the ill-fated quarter-final clash against the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia during the disappointing outing at the AFCON2021 held in Cameroon early this year.

The Super Eagles have five wins, three draws, two of which were against Ghana at the crucial stage of the World Cup qualifiers, and one defeat in that period.

Head-to-head

These two are meeting for the second time in less than a year but for the seventh time in total.

Nigeria lost woefully the last time both sides met, with El Tri putting four goals past the Super Eagles, who were largely dominated by players from the Nigeria Professional Football League, NPFL, back on July 4, 2021.

The Mexicans have the edge in this tie, having won three and drawn three of the previous six games between them.

Nigeria’s best result against the North American giants was the 2-2 draw in the build-up to the 2014 World Cup.

Team News

Mexico have a fully fit squad to choose from but are expected to be without cultured midfielder, Hector Herrera, who will miss the game against Nigeria after he arrived late to camp.

For Nigeria, a total of 20 players are now in camp following the arrival of Feyenoord’s star and the Europa Conference League top scorer, Cyriel Dessers.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have been training under the watchful eyes of the new manager, Peseiro and his team of coaches with the Portuguese manager set to have a fully fit squad to pick from, too.

When will the match kickoff?

The game between the Super Eagles and Mexico is expected to kick off at 1:08 am Nigerian time on Sunday.
