Ex-Super Eagles invitee Phillip Billings scored the second fastest goal in Premier League history against Arsenal
Phillip Billing’s goal against Arsenal was rapid, and straight from kickoff with Arsenal unable to muster any possession before conceding the goal. Billing was able to score for Bournemouth faster than Usain Bolt’s world record in the 100m sprint, but it still was not quick enough to beat the record for the fastest goal scored in Premier League history, as that record still belongs to Shane Long, whose goal was a full two seconds faster.
Billing’s goal was, however, quick enough to make the top five fastest goals in EPL history, and consequently, this fine list below.
5. Christian Eriksen TOTTENHAM vs Manchester United (January 31, 2018) —10.54 seconds
He might play for them now, but Eriksen used to be a nightmare for Manchester United while he still played for Tottenham. One fine example of the great Dane terrorising his new club is this goal, scored after only 10.54 seconds in the New Wembley Stadium while it was still Tottenham’s home ground.
The goal remains the fastest scored at the stadium to date and Tottenham went on to win by 2-0 thanks to another goal by Phil Jones at the wrong end.
4. Alan Shearer NEWCASTLE UNITED vs Manchester City (January 18, 2003) — 10.52 seconds
Even in the twilight of Alan Shearer’s career, he was still banging in goals for Newcastle. He scored 17 Premier League goals in the 2002/03 season, including what is now the fourth-fastest goal in Premier League history.
Shearer scored after only 10.52 seconds against a Manchester City side far from the calibre they have today in a 2-0 win for the Toon army
3. Ledley King Bradford City vs TOTTENHAM (December 9, 2000) — 9.82 seconds
Tottenham have scored the second most goals (12) inside the first minute of matches in Premier League history, second only to Chelsea (11); it comes as no surprise that they have a second player on this list.
Ledley King’s strike against Bradford City in the 2000/01 season was only just displaced by Billing’s strike and occurred after only 9.82 seconds. The speed of the goal is made even more remarkable by the fact that King was playing as a defender that day and that was his only goal that season.
2. Philip Billing Arsenal vs BOURNEMOUTH (March 4, 2023) — 9.11 seconds
Fans barely got to their seats when Billing stroked the ball home following a quick and well-orchestrated Bournemouth move against Arsenal that lasted only 9.11 seconds after kick-off.
Although Bournemouth eventually went on to lose the game, the goal will live on in Billing’s and the Cherries’ memories as the fastest goal in the club’s Premier League history so far.
1. Shane Long Watford vs SOUTHAMPTON (April 23, 2019) — 7.69 seconds
Shane Long will always be remembered for two things, playing an entire year as a forward without scoring in the league and scoring the Premier League’s fastest-ever goal.
Ironically, Long had scored in the match preceding the Watford game and also scored in the match after it, which is great form for a striker famed for not scoring often, but both those goals pale in significance compared to this one scored after only 7.69 seconds.
