FUFA head of marketing and broadcasting Rodgers Byamukama has revealed why East Africa's 2027 AFCON bid will go through.

The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) head of marketing and broadcasting Rodgers Byamukama believes Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania's infrastructure give the East Africa Pamoja Bid a huge boost.

Speaking to Pulse Sports during the Football Foundation for Africa’s football summit held in Nairobi last week, Byamukama insisted that even if the region fails in the bid which he is “sure” will go through, the level of sporting infrastructure would move up another level.

“Even if we do not win the bid which I am sure we will win, the works that are ongoing in terms of stadia infrastructure improvement will ensure that it does not stay the same, it will improve,” Byamukama said.

Byamukama borrowed a leaf from Kenya’s bid to host the 2018 Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) which allowed for the construction of stadia such as Kinoru in Meru and Bukhungu in Kakamega.

“When Kenya bid to host CHAN, that is when we saw stadia like Bukhungu coming up, that is when we saw Kinoru Stadium in Meru coming up. They may not have been completed in the proverbial 100 days, but you can see literally every country is doing a football facility. The bid is about improving facilities.”

Byamukama also believes that some of the medical facilities in the region do not compare to the rest of Africa, which will give it an edge in the battle to win the bid.

“Apart from stadia, we have all the other necessities in East Africa, be it hotels, security, hospitals. A Lot of people come from all over Africa to come and get treated here. Some of them never make it back, but they come here. There is alot of medical service on offer here.

“In Tanzania, Muhimbili Hospital is the only facility that gives heart transplants, did you know that? So we have a lot of capacity to do it.”

Byamukama has dismissed people who are pessimistic about the region’s chances of hosting the tourney without “even understanding” the criteria that could make CAF award the bid to the region for the 2027 AFCON.

“We find ourselves disappointed to see people who do not believe in this bid without even understanding what it is in the bid. But we are on track and we look forward to enjoying the extravaganza in 2027.
