On Tuesday, the football governing body revealed that the national team, the Uganda Cranes, would honour Willy Kyambadde with a moment of silence before kickoff in their international friendly against DR Congo on Wednesday.
As the country continues to mourn fallen star Jamil Willy Kyambadde who breathed his last on Monday at his home in Kawempe, a Kampala suburb, FUFA has taken it a step further to honour the fallen left-footed magician.
On Tuesday, the football governing body revealed that the national team, the Uganda Cranes, would honour Willy Kyambadde with a moment of silence before kickoff in their international friendly against DR Congo on Wednesday.
“In honour of the departed star (Willy Kyambadde), FUFA confirms that a moment of silence will be observed in his memory before the kickoff of the international friendly match between DR Congo and Uganda on June 14, 2023, at the Japoma Stadium in Douala, Cameroon,” FUFA said in a statement.
Kyambadde, a flawless genius nicknamed the Black Maradona during his playing days in Vietnam, was gifted with a left foot.
One unforgettable chapter in his storied career was in 2002, during the Group E World Cup qualifier against Guinea at Nakivubo Stadium on April 8 2000.
With Uganda trailing 2-0, Kyambadde engineered a breathtaking comeback, setting up three goals and capping it off with a sublime last-minute equalizer that salvaged a thrilling 4-4 draw.
‘Kyamba Willy’ also featured for the famous overly talented U-23 Kobs team, which qualified for the 1999 All Africa Games in South Africa.
Uganda secured an impressive second-place finish as a young-faced Cranes squad of players like Kyambadde, Ibra Ssekagya, Morley Byekwaso, Andy Lule, and Phillip Ssozi, to mention a few, put up a show.
Arua Garage, Express FC, KCCA FC, Proline FC and Soltilo Bright Stars are the local sides he featured for on the local scene. Kyambadde will be laid to rest on Tuesday at his ancestral home in Bugerere Kayunga, Mukono District.
