Group C took centre stage at the ongoing AFCON U-20, with North Africans Tunisia registering their first point in the competition.

West Africans Gambia are through to the quarterfinal of the TotalEnergies U-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt after a decisive win over Zambia on Friday.

Two second-half goals from the Young Scorpions saw them overpower their counterparts from Zambia, the Copper Bullets, to secure the ticket to the knockout stage.

South Africa-based Kajally Drammeh opened the scoring when he gave the Scorpions the lead midway through the second half before captain and man of the match, Alagie Saine, sealed the deal with a late penalty.

Drammeh celebrates the opening goal.

The game in brief

The Gambians dominated proceedings but found the Zambians a difficult nut to crack in the opening half.

However, three minutes after the hour mark, the Young Scorpions finally broke the resistance of the young Copper Bullets when Drammeh found the breakthrough with the game's opening goal.

Captain fantastic, Saine, will wrap things up late on with a late penalty that gave the Scorpions their second win and as many matches and a place in the knockout stages.

Tunisia hold off Benin

In the other match in Group C, Tunisia registered their first point at the U-20 AFCON after a goalless affair with Benin Republic.

Both countries clashed at the Haras El Houloud Stadium in Alexandria looking to get their first win in the competition.

Tunisia lost their opener against Gambia 1-0 while Benin played out an entertaining 2-2 draw despite leading 2-1 at some point in the game.

However, after 90 minutes in Alexandria, it was the young Carthage Eaglets who left the happier of the two after registering their first point following a share of the spoils.

The Cheetahs still have their destiny in their hands but will have to step up their game a notch if they are to pick the second ticket in the group. They face leaders, Gambia's Scorpions, in their final game of the group stage.
