Former England boss Gareth Southgate has been lined up for a new role after leaving his job as manager of the Three Lions.

The BBC are reportedly in the market for a big name to anchor their flagship show 'Match of the Day' and have identified none other than former England boss Gareth Southgate.

And here's the juicy part - they're hoping to create a bit of tension with host Gary Lineker, who was pretty harsh on the Three Lions during the Euros.

Southgate to take on new role after England exit

Southgate recently stepped down after England's defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final, and now the BBC wants to capitalize on his expertise - and his potential rivalry with Lineker.

The BBC is willing to take the risk, hoping that the two will "hammer out their differences" on live TV. As one source put it, "Two of England's greatest football heroes going head-to-head every week would be unmissable telly!"

This will not be a straightforward deal for the BBC as ITV are also interested in snapping up the ex-England boss, especially since their current pundit, Gary Neville, is heading back to Sky.

Southgate is reportedly taking time off and it is unclear when he will return to management

Meanwhile, England continue their search for a new manager with several names in the running, including Newcastle boss Eddie Howe, and ex-Chelsea head coach Graham Potter.
