Mason Greenwood is set for a permanent move to Marseille from Manchester United and Getafe are heartbroken by the news.

Spanish side Getafe are in despair after Manchester United misfit Mason Greenwood looks poised to seal a permanent move to Marseille, dashing the club's hopes of keeping the 22-year-old.

According to renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano, the French giants have reached an agreement with the Red Devils over a £30 million deal for the troubled forward, who is set to undergo a medical and sign a contract until 2029.

Greenwood spent the 2023/24 campaign on loan at Getafe, where he enjoyed a remarkable renaissance, scoring 10 goals and providing 6 assists in 36 appearances to be named the club's Player of the Season.

The former England international's stellar form at the Coliseum Alfonso Pérez had led Getafe to harbour ambitions of securing his signature permanently, but they have now been left heartbroken as Marseille swooped in.

Getafe took to social media to share an emotional video celebrating Greenwood's memorable spell with the LaLiga outfit, acknowledging the bittersweet nature of his impending departure.

The Spanish side have, however, wasted little time in finding a replacement, quickly securing the signing of 21-year-old Nigerian midfielder Christantus Uche from AD Ceuta FC on a four-year deal.

Uche, an under-23 international with Nigeria, played a pivotal role in Ceuta's impressive campaign last season and will now have the opportunity to showcase his talents in the Spanish top flight.

The move for Greenwood represents a significant coup for Marseille, who have beaten off competition from a host of suitors to land the once-promising United starlet.

The Ligue 1 club will be hoping Greenwood can rediscover the form that made him one of the most exciting young talents in world football before his off-field issues, with the transfer package also including a 50% sell-on clause per Fabrizio Romano.

For Manchester United, the deal represents a chance to recoup a sizable fee for a player who has been exiled from the first-team picture at Old Trafford, providing a much-needed financial boost as they continue their squad rebuild under Erik ten Hag.

The departure of Greenwood will no doubt be met with mixed emotions by the United faithful, who will be relieved to see the saga surrounding the player's future finally conclude, but also disappointed to see a player of such immense potential depart the club.
