Despite the poor run that forced former coach Finidi George to resign, the Nigerian national team has managed to maintain its status as one of the top-ranked teams in Africa, coming in at 39th in the world.

However, their disappointing results in the World Cup qualifiers have led to a one-place slide in the rankings, fuelling belief that neighbours, Ghana, who sit 12th on the continent, will leapfrog Nigeria soon.
