Victor Osimhen believes Rashidi Yekini will always be Nigeria's greatest ever striker.

Victor Osimhen has called on Nigerians to give the late Rashidi Yekini his 'flowers', emphasising the legendary status of the forward as the greatest striker in Super Eagles history.

Following his recent goal that tied him with Segun Odegbami for second place on Nigeria's all-time scorers list, Osimhen took a moment to reflect on the significance of Yekini's achievements.

In a video shared on social media, Osimhen stated that he is not after any records before calling on Nigerians to celebrate Yekini’s status as Nigeria’s greatest-ever striker.

“This record stood for a very long time and still stands,” the Galatasaray striker noted. “So, we should really give that man his flowers and also celebrate him,” he added.

Osimhen's remarks come after he scored his 23rd goal for Nigeria in a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Benin Republic during the AFCON 2025 qualifiers.

The goal not only secured a point for the Super Eagles but also brought him level with Odegbami in the all-time rankings. However, he remains 14 goals shy of Yekini's impressive tally of 37 goals.

The Napoli striker acknowledged Yekini's monumental impact on Nigerian football, stating that while he aspires to continue scoring for his country, he believes that honouring Yekini's legacy is paramount.

As coach Augustine Eguavoen and his coaches prepare for their final qualifying match against Rwanda, Osimhen is focused on helping his team succeed while also looking to add to his goal tally.

The call to celebrate Yekini resonates deeply with fans who remember his pivotal role in Nigerian football history. As Osimhen continues to rise in prominence within the national team, he remains committed to honouring those who paved the way before him while striving to leave his mark on the game.
