FKFPL Good and bad news for Gor Mahia ahead of Tusker clash

Gor Mahia faces Tusker in a crucial league match with injuries to key players, creating uncertainty in their bid for the title.

Gor Mahia are gearing up for a crucial showdown against Tusker FC in a Football Kenya Federation Premier League match set to be played on Saturday, January 20, 2024 at Machakos Stadium.

While the team is in high spirits, they have received both good and bad news from their head coach, Johnathan McKinstry, regarding their squad for the upcoming match.

The bad news for Gor Mahia is that influential midfielder John Macharia will not be available to play against Tusker.

Macharia sustained an ankle injury during training last week, causing him to miss the previous game against Kariobangi Sharks.

McKinstry provided an update on Macharia's condition, stating, "John Macharia unfortunately hasn't trained this week a lot. You know, he was very unlucky. He had a great training week last week and then sort of the day before the match against Sharks, he picked up a little ankle injury and that's hung around this week. So he's not in consideration."

However, there is a glimmer of hope for Gor Mahia as Joshua Onyango, who was stretchered off during a recent match, is now fit and available for selection.

McKinstry confirmed this positive development, saying, "But Joshua Onyango is fine again after coming off injured. And yeah, other than that, it's a clean bill of health for everybody. So really just John Macharia isn't sort of available, but everyone else is."

Gor Mahia currently tops the league table with 40 points, while Tusker FC sits in third place with 31 points after 18 rounds of matches.

A victory for Tusker would narrow the gap between them and Gor Mahia at the top of the table. On the other hand, a loss for the brewers would allow K’Ogalo to maintain their edge in the race for their 21st league title.

Tusker FC has struggled against Gor Mahia in recent encounters, with no victories in the last three consecutive matches.

Tusker's coach, Matano, believes that poor officiating played a role in two of those matches, and another ended in a frustrating goalless draw, as they were denied a clear goal.

The last time Tusker FC managed to overcome Gor Mahia was on April 16, 2022, when they secured a memorable 2-0 victory at Narok Stadium.

As the two titans of Kenyan football prepare to face off once again, the absence of John Macharia will undoubtedly be felt by Gor Mahia.

Nevertheless, with Joshua Onyango back in action, they remain determined to maintain their lead at the summit of the league table.

Tusker FC, on the other hand, will be looking to break their recent winless streak against their fierce rivals and close the gap in the race for the title.
