Tanzanian giants Yanga have revealed record revenues generated from the 2023-24 season which passed the Ksh1 billion mark for the first time in the club’s history.

Tanzanian champions Yanga crossed the Ksh1 billion mark in annual revenues for the just-concluded 2023-24 season but still ended up making a loss.

Yanga made total revenues of Tsh21,193,737,743 (Ksh1,055,520,425) from their multiple sources in the season when they defended their league crown and reached the CAF Champions League quarter-final but it was still not enough to make a profit for the club.

The club’s main sources of revenue were sponsorship and broadcasting rights which generated Tsh10,167,770,141 (Ksh506,389,632), ticket sales: Tsh1,491,730,378 (Ksh74,293,260), membership registration/renewal: Tsh613,330,446 (Tsh30,545,948), prize money: Tsh3,461,750,000 (Ksh172,406,957) with other avenues bringing in Tsh5,459,156,778 (Ksh271,884,627).

That was a 22 per cent increase on the Tsh12,605,290,962 (Ksh627,786,483) raised in 2022-23, translating in Tsh8,588,446,781 (Ksh427,733,942), more but expenses rose significantly, leaving Wananchi in the red.

Yanga’s total expenses stood at Tsh22,288,207,535 (Ksh1,110,028,754) driven primarily by a huge outlay on the squad and technical bench.

The key drivers for Yanga’s expenses were salaries, accounting for Tsh7,393,629,334 (Ksh368,227,958), transfer fees: Tsh3,504,337,000 (Ksh174,527,934), transport and accommodation: Tsh2,890,653,738 (Ksh143,964,415) while motivation to players and technical bench gobbled up Tsh2,602,415,884 (Ksh129,609,187).

It saw the club make a loss of Tsh1,094,469,792 (Ksh54,508,328), showing just how expensive it has become to run the club even now that they are a key revenue generator.

It is, however, a positive outlook on Yanga who continue enjoying a high affinity for sponsorship under the leadership of club president Hersi Said.

"Our club needs to keep supporting itself financially. Our job as officials is to ensure we keep getting sponsors who will work together with our main partner GSM. Our fans also have a responsibility of ensuring they keep the club afloat through membership fees,” enumerated Said, during the club’s AGM in Dar es Salaam on Sunday.

The massive revenue shows how the Tanzanian giants have made a giant stride in the region, at a time when Kenyan side AFC Leopards announced revenues of Ksh103,167,127 from the 2023 financial year.
