Gor Mahia earned significant gate collections from the Mashemeji Derby against AFC Leopards, but official figures have not been confirmed.

Gor Mahia reaped big during the latest Mashemeji Derby not just on the pitch with a 1-0 victory over AFC Leopards but also financially with reports suggesting a massive collection from ticket sales.

The showdown held at Nyayo National Stadium attracted over 15,000 fans underlining the match’s popularity and the fierce rivalry that continues to draw significant attention each season.

According to sources close to the club, Gor Mahia FC may have generated approximately Ksh 4.5 million from the event.

This figure, however, remains unconfirmed as attempts to get a comment from club vice-chairman Francis Wasuna were unsuccessful. The financial boost comes at a crucial time for the club, which had faced logistical challenges leading up to the derby.

The club had initially planned to host the match at Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos. However, K'Ogalo negotiated with Sports Kenya to temporarily host the match at Nyayo after the ban that was imposed in November last year, following vandalism by some Gor Mahia fans.

The ban was a response to damages incurred at Moi International Sports Centre (MISC), Kasarani, during a match against newcomers Murang’a Seal, which ended in a 1-1 draw.

Ticket prices for the derby were set at Ksh. 1,000 for VIP seats and Ksh. 300 for regular seats, a pricing strategy that seems to have paid off well in terms of revenue.

During the first leg of the encounter last October at MISC, Kasarani—which Gor Mahia won 2-0—AFC Leopards managed to raise Sh2.8 million from a total of 12,172 tickets sold, with VVIP tickets priced at Sh1,000, VIP at Sh500, and regular tickets at Sh300.
