Gor Mahia begin FKF Premier League title defence against Mathare.
Gor Mahia captain Philemon Otieno believes that their recent experience in the CAF Champions League will play a pivotal role in their quest to defend their FKF Premier League title.
As the team gears up for their season opener against newly promoted Mathare United, Otieno is confident that the lessons learned from their tough campaign will give them an edge in the domestic competition.
Gor Mahia’s journey in Africa’s premier inter-club competition came to an abrupt end following a 6-0 aggregate defeat at the hands of defending champions Al Ahly. After losing 3-0 at home in the first leg at Nyayo National Stadium, the Kenyan giants were handed another 3-0 loss in Cairo amidst internal struggles, including disciplinary issues that saw two players, including Rooney Onyango, left out of the match.

Despite the disappointing exit, Otieno remains optimistic about the future. He sees their Champions League exploits as a valuable learning experience that will fuel their title defense in the FKF Premier League.
"We have learned our lesson from the competition where we played a high-level team, and it is about time we use the experience we got and apply it to the league," Otieno explained.
Gor Mahia has endured a turbulent offseason since lifting their league title last June. After the departure of coach Johnathan McKinstry, the club appointed Leo Neiva as the new head coach.
However, results in regional competitions have been underwhelming, including a group-stage exit in the CECAFA Kagame Cup and missing out on the inaugural Cole City Cup. The squad also dealt with internal strife, with players staging a strike over prize money, though the issue was resolved internally.

AFC Leopards goalkeeper Levis Opiyo blames ‘dark forces’ for his woeful performances in Mashemeji derbies
The AFC Leopards shot stopper has blamed his recent errors in matches against Gor Mahia to ‘dark forces’ but vowed to exorcise all in upcoming Mashemeji derbies.
One of the few bright spots for Gor Mahia was their emphatic 5-1 win over South Sudan’s El Merreikh Beintu in the second leg of the CAF Champions League first preliminary round. Otieno emphasized that the team remains focused on transferring the positives from their continental campaign into domestic success.
Gor Mahia will kick off their delayed FKF Premier League season on Saturday against Mathare United, a team that has struggled to gain momentum since returning to the top flight, with two draws and a defeat so far.
"Our history with Mathare is not bad, but despite that, they remain a good team, and that is why they are back in the league. We have to be perfect in all departments for us to get maximum points and start the season on a high note," said Otieno.
As the most successful club in Kenyan football, Gor Mahia is determined to secure their 22nd league title. Otieno made it clear that their ambition is to continue dominating the domestic league. "We want to continue dominating the local league, and that is why we have to make sure we get as many points as possible in each and every game," he added.
