FOOTBALL Gor Mahia captain labels Omala ‘the next Dennis Oliech’

Omala is the current Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKFPL) top scorer.

Gor Mahia skipper Philemon Otieno has tipped his on-form teammate Benson Omala to achieve the dizzying heights of arguably Kenya’s greatest football export Dennis Oliech.

Omala is enjoying a blistering season that has seen him net 16 goals in 16 games including a hat-trick against Wazito FC back in mid-February.

The former Western Stima forward has netted more or an equal number of goals than 38% of the teams in the league which includes Posta Rangers, Sofapaka, Nairobi City Stars, Wazito, and Vihiga Bullets, and has a similar tally to Bandari and Mathare United.

Having played with Oliech back in 2019 during his final club stint with Gor Mahia, Philemon reserved lavish praise for Omala as he revealed that he could be the next top striker to emerge from Kenya.

“Omala is talented and according to me I see the next Dennis Oliech in him, he is a player who works really hard and he also loves football. I see him going far,” Philemon told NTV.

Omala has been a vital cog in Gor Mahia’s resurgence that currently sees them sit at the summit of the log as he has scored 16 of the 24 goals the club has netted this season.

A number of Kenyan players who have been dubbed ‘the next Dennis Oliech’ have failed to live up to expectations but early signs indicate that Omala is on the right trajectory.

Oliech is one of the all-time Harambee Stars, top scorers, with 34 goals in 76 appearances from 2002 to 2016, and has featured for top clubs such as Nantes, Auxerre, and Ajaccio.

Since his budding days in football, Omala has been used to the big stage as he was selected in the Chapa Dimba All Stars team that went to Spain back in 2019.

The 21-year-old was also awarded the December 2019 Kenyan Premier League Player of the Month while he was still in Form Four in Kisumu Day High School.

Philemon also touched on what has worked for Gor Mahia this season following a disastrous campaign last season that saw them finish the campaign trophyless for the first time since 2016.

"It's the guidance of the senior players who have been in the club for a long time. We are trying to give them (young players) good guidance and the new coach has also brought in new ideas,” added Omala.
