Gor Mahia coach Johnathan McKinstry has explained what he did differently to achieve their biggest win of the season following the 4-0 thrashing of Posta Rangers last weekend.
Gor Mahia coach Johnathan McKinstry believes a decision to field a second-string team in their FKF Cup Round of 32 against Denmark FC paid off following their 4-0 thrashing of Posta Rangers at the weekend.
K’Ogalo recorded their biggest win of the season when they blitzed past Rangers, scoring three goals in the second half, after the mailmen had been reduced to 10 men.
It was just the second time this season that Gor Mahia had scored four goals, having largely been winning by one goal-margins, and McKinstry feels that would not have been possible had he not taken the risk of leaving his first 11 in Nairobi for the cup game which his team suffered a shock elimination.

FOOTBALL FKFPL: Austin Odhiambo getting Gor in the groove, Gitego paying off for Ingwe but no respite for Shabana
Gor Mahia’s Austin Odhiambo is turning into their Mr Reliable, Arthur Gitego showed AFC Leopards fans what they have been missing but so much to worry for Shabana.
“We made a strategic decision to leave almost all of the entire starting 11 of today’s [Saturday’s] game in Nairobi. We did not even travel with them to Mombasa last week because we knew they needed that reset, they needed a few days off to get their energy back,” said McKinstry.
“We knew if we gave them that and took a risk in the cup, we would be able to reset and fly in the last 12 games of the season and in training, they gave us so much energy and we saw it in the performance.”
The tactician believes his side are now energised and ready for the final part of the season as they seek to defend their league title, having shown great hunger against Rangers.
“I don’t think I am being crude by saying it, it could have been eight or nine goals. We are very pleased with the four goals but if we think of the other ones which were cleared off the line and were just narrowly missed, it could have been eight or nine goals,” added McKinstry.
“These types of wins give the fans, the club and players more energy and we have a huge game next against Bandari in Mombasa and we just have to reset again but these guys are capable of anything.”
Gor Mahia enjoy a 10-point lead against second-placed Tusker FC with 11 games remaining.
