McKinstry cites last season's incredibly tight title race as a valid reason the league is still of high quality.
Gor Mahia head coach Johnathan McKinstry has jumped to the defence of Football Kenya Federation Premier League’s (FKFPL) apparent ‘low quality’ according to critics saying that last season was the most competitive in recent years.
The Northern Irishman has opted to differ with the opinions of critics who say that the league is of 'low qualify' and not 'competitive enough' after his side won the league by a solitary point last season.

FOOTBALL Tusker pay glowing tribute to departing veteran midfielder Humphrey Mieno
The Brewers have parted ways with the experienced star who has been part of their key players in recent years.
Gor won the league on 70 points, just one ahead of Tusker, while Kenya Police, Nzoia Sugar, and KCB tied on 64 points to finish third, fourth, and fifth respectively.
In June, Francis Kimanzi told Pulse Sports that he had no plans of getting back into the league any time soon, criticizing the league’s low standards as a reason he was in no hurry to return.

FOOTBALL: Ex-Leopards winger Paul Were sets sight on explosive return to Europe
Were has revealed the real reason he has failed to get an opportunity to play at the biggest European leagues despite enjoying stints for various Greek clubs.
“I have a lot of people calling me and saying; ‘come back and rescue us’ because things are not good.”
“The football is not great, the games are boring, the standards of our league have really gone down. If Gor Mahia won the title with a weak team like the one they had, you can imagine how the rest are,” he said.
The same was said by Harambee Stars head coach Engin Firat before the friendly against Iran as he also hit out of the physicality of the league.

FOOTBALL Big spending FKF Premier League side offer to buy out Gad Mathews' Gor Mahia contract
Mathews kept 17 clean sheets last season emerging as the joint-best goalkeeper in the FKF Premier League.
McKinstry thinks otherwise, citing last season's title race as a good example of Kimanzi and other critics' theories 'not adding up',
“The evidence does not add that theory up,” said McKinstry in an interview with One on One with Jeff Kinyanjui. “If you look at the points Tusker scored last season, that is more than the points Tusker have collected in any of their title-winning seasons,”

FOOTBALL Rating the foreigners that have landed Gor Mahia & AFC Leopards in hot soup: Were they worth the trouble?
Pulse Sports puts the foreigners that have caused K’Ogalo and Ingwe so much pain on the weighing scale to gauge whether they were value for money.
“69 points is the highest number of points a team barring Gor Mahia has gained in the last 20 years. Second, third, and even fourth-placed teams had more points than any other similarly placed teams in recent seasons.
“The top five collected more points this season than at any points in the last 15 or 20 years. Only K’Ogalo have ever hit the 70-point mark in the modern era. We managed to do it again this season.

From a hot-head to mature general: Gor Mahia coach Mckinstry hails Ernest Wendo's professionalism and longevity
Wendo has evolved over his time at Gor, from being an all action box to box player who had the tendency to play on the edge, which constantly left him getting booked or sent off to being a mature player who dictates play from the middle of the park and sits in front of the defense.
“The idea that the league was weak last season just does not stack up because when you look at the statistics, the season Gor finished on 78 points, the second-placed side that season had 58 or 59.
“It took 70 points to win the title this season. It ranks fifth of all title wins in history. It was a good season.”

FOOTBALL Why it was wrong for Namwamba to rescue debt-ridden Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards
The Sports CS rightly blasted K’Ogalo and Ingwe for their ‘bad manners’ but it was not right to reward the bad habits.
“We had to give it everything and had no room to rest and we know we need more next season.”
Meanwhile, McKinstry believes Gor must wipe their mouths from the brutal punch they received after being knocked out of the CAF Champions League and do whatever it takes to retain their title.

FOOTBALL AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia be warned! No shenanigans at Ulinzi Complex
The two Kenyan giants have hinted at shifting their base to the military-owned grounds but they will have to meet some tough conditions to be allowed in.
“The signings we are making are about helping us retain our league title because if you think Tusker, Police, Bandari and KCB are going to just sit around this season, then you are fooling yourself. We have already seen the movements they are making and the money they are spending.
“Some of the players resigning for us have been offered more money by other clubs but snubbed them to stay with us because they want to play for us, which is the attitude I want.”
