Top of the table Gor Mahia remain the only unbeaten side in the FKF Premier League this season as they look to retain their title but what is the reason behind the good run?

Gor Mahia’s good start to the season has been attributed to great motivation and competition within the team as they remain the only unbeaten team in the FKF Premier League so far this season.

K’Ogalo are top of the table on 28 points from 14 matches, one ahead of second-placed Kakamega Homeboyz, and two adrift of Posta Rangers in third.

That leaves them in prime position to retain their title even if the chasing pack are breathing down their necks but unlike in previous campaigns when their preparations were hampered by go-slows over late or non-payment of salaries, things are different this time round.

A Gor Mahia official who sought anonymity has credited their flawless preparations and run to their sponsors SportPesa who have taken a huge financial load off the club by ensuring the players are paid promptly.

“As long as they are assured that money is there, the boys will always perform. They will always push and get good results,” said the official.

“The salaries are paid directly to their accounts by the fifth of every month. That comfort is a great motivation.”

With the lifting of their transfer ban which saw them sign more players and register others, the official also feels increased competition in the squad has seen every player raise their level since any low standards will lead to lost opportunities.

“The last two years, we were playing with around 18 players. Now, we have two in each position and there is healthy competition. You have to train really well to get into the team,” he added.

With no off-field distractions, coach Johnathan McKinstry has focused on getting a tune out of his players who have responded positively.

It is still early days to declare who will win the title given the gap between Gor and sixth-placed Murang’a Seal is just six points but there is every indication that they will be the team to beat again this season.

K’Ogalo would be out of sight even this early in the campaign had they not drawn seven of the 14 games they have played so far but the manner in which they responded to going two goals down to draw 2-2 with Nzoia Sugar last weekend and their recent last-minute winners show a team high on confidence.

Gor Mahis have two challenging fixtures against FC Talanta and Bandari before the end of the year and their supporters will be hoping that they retain their unblemished run.
