Early goals by John Macharia and Austin Odhiambo were enough to sink Ulinzi Stars to sail back to the top of the table.
Gor Mahia started the game in fantastic style, and they went ahead in the 4th minute through Austin Odhiambo when he slotted home past a helpless James Saruni to put K’ogalo ahead.
They would double their lead in the ninth minute through John Macharia when he capitalized on a rebound. Ugandan striker Patrick Kaddu who was starting in place of the unfit Benson Omalla tested Saruni’s nerve, but the shot stopper parried the ball straight to Macharia who could hardly miss.
Ulinzi Stars first attempt of the match came in the 15th minute when Elly Saenyi crossed beautifully in the box towards striker Enosh Ochieng who controlled it and fired at goal but the ball went wide.
In the 26th minute, Ulizni tried to threaten again when Stephen Etyang attempted a good freekick but Gor custodian Gad Mathews managed to clear the ball for a corner.
Ulinzi started quite well in the second half and won a free kick just outside the area, but Etyang could not take it well this time, as Gor’s wall easily dealt away with it, setting the team up for a counter attacking situation which started to put them back in control.
Gor could have gone three goals up with Odhiambo getting his second of the afternoon when he got on the end of a neat Shafik Kagimu delivery, but he could not execute his shot properly which made Ulinzi clear the ball away safely.
Gor started managing the game excellently, enjoying spells of possession for a large part of the next 20 minutes, but they nearly were made to pay after turning over possession in the 68th minute.
Omar Mbongi played a one-two with Enosh, tried to have an effort at goal on his weaker left foot but Mathews came to the rescue.
Boniface Omondi then got on the end of a Paul Ochuoga cross moments later, but his effort skied over the sticks.
Ulinzi’s changes made them more settled and balanced and in the 80th minute, another good cross by Etyang’ was not enough to trouble the Gor defense.
In the end, the two early goals were enough to give them the win to put them back to the top of the table on 67 points with two matches to go.
