Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga who was in attendance at the Raila Odinga stadium in Homa Bay during the Mara Sugar and Gor Mahia clash made donations towards both team.

Defending champions Gor Mahia staged a dramatic late show to secure a 2-0 victory against Mara Sugar in an FKF Premier League (FKFPL) fixture at the Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay on Saturday.

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who graced the event, generously rewarded both teams and the match officials for their efforts.

K’Ogalo’s goals came in the dying moments of the game, with Austin Odhiambo breaking the deadlock in the 87th minute and Gedeon Bendeka sealing the win with a stoppage-time strike in the 92nd minute.

The victory marked their second successive triumph under interim coach Zedekiah 'Zico' Otieno, following the dismissal of Brazilian head coach Leonardo Neiva.

Odinga, a key supporter of Kenyan football and an African Union Chairperson hopeful, praised the high level of football on display and announced cash rewards for the teams and officials.

Gor Mahia, as the visiting defending champions, received Kshs 700,000, while Mara Sugar, the home side, were awarded Kshs 300,000. An additional Kshs 100,000 was given to the match officials.

"I am very happy with the level of football on display today. Congratulations to Mara Sugar for their performance. As the home team, I donate Kshs 300,000 to them, and Kshs 100,000 to the referees," Odinga stated.

"For K’Ogalo, who traveled from Nairobi and are the defending champions, I award Kshs 700,000."

The win signals a resurgence for Gor Mahia, who hope to build momentum and put their title defense back on track after a challenging start to the season.

Meanwhile, Mara Sugar, who are enjoying a strong debut season in the top flight, will aim to bounce back and build on their 16 points from 10 matches, including four wins, four draws, and two losses.
