Gor Mahia’s midfield sensation Austin Odhiambo has dedicated his FKFPL Most Valuable Player (MVP) award to his mother after she was involved in a road accident on Thursday, leaving her nursing injuries.
Odhiambo, who has been in exceptional form this season with 12 league goals and 13 assists, was crowned the 2023/2024 MVP, earning admiration from the Kenyan footballing community for his stellar performances.
Despite a dramatic offseason, which saw him skip the CECAFA Kagame Cup amidst speculation over his future and interest from overseas clubs including Belgian side Gent, Odhiambo returned to training earlier this week.

Tragedy struck on Thursday when Odhiambo's mother was involved in a road accident while traveling from Gilgil. Although she has stabilized in the hospital, she is currently immobile. Odhiambo expressed his dedication to her through his award.
“It is a motivation to me as a player. It shows I have been working hard. I dedicate this award to my mother,” Odhiambo said.
“She is the one who motivated me to play football. I wish she could be here today but she was unfortunately involved in an accident yesterday. They were traveling from Gilgil before she was involved in that accident. She cannot walk for now, but she is stable.”

Gor Mahia midfielder Austin Odhiambo crowned MVP as FKF Premier League awards best performers
The midfielder was named FKF Premier League MVP beating two finalists after leading Gor Mahia to a 21st league title.
Odhiambo also thanked the support staff who have played a part in his development, acknowledging the challenges he faced during the season.
“I am so happy and I feel so privileged to have been named the most valuable player in the league, and I thank all those who voted for me. We keep pushing for more,” Odhiambo said.
“It has been a tough season. The opposition has been tricky. It was the hardest, and luckily the best of my career so far.”
In June 2023, former Gor Mahia coach Johnathan McKinstry tipped Odhiambo to become the best player in the country. The midfielder is deeply grateful to the new Gambia coach for his role in his development.
“He has been like a father to me. He is the one who got me to where I am in my career right now. I thank him so much,” Odhiambo said.
