The coach did not want to be drawn into the top scorer's debate that is intensifying.

Gor Mahia head coach Johnathan McKinstry has played down the pressure building on Benson Omala in the Golden Boot race.

After leading the race for some time, Omala was overtaken on Wednesday by Police FC striker Elvis Rupia, who now has 26 goals, compared to Omala’s 25.

"He [Omala] is a team player, and he is always getting in the right position, but look, our focus is not on any individual, it is about going and winning the next game," McKinstry told the media.

Omala, who was returning from international duty with the Harambee Stars, was on the bench and came on in the second half.

He scored, but his goal was ruled out for offside; "I would really hope that the lineman’s call was wrong, but I will watch it back. But obviously, he is getting into the right position," the coach added.

Omala will have his focus split on the final day, as he will be hoping to score more and win the Golden Boot while also helping Gor Mahia win and bag their 20th top flight title.

The Golden Boot race has been a two-horse race for the better part of this campaign. Rupia trailed Omala for weeks, but the former AFC Leopards striker kept on closing the gap and eventually overtook the former Kisumu Day forward in the latter stages of the league.

Joseph Mwangi of Nzoia Sugar, who is linked with a move to Bandari, has 15 and is third on the scorers’ chart.

Bandari duo Hassan Abdallah and Umaru Kasumba have 12 goals each, the same as Kelvin Etemesi of the Nairobi City Stars.

Deogratius Ojok, who has led the line in most cases for Tusker in the absence of Ibrahim Joshua, has 10.
